Walk On The Wild Side

I love my family very much.
But I also love my own company.
Last year I ran every morning along the beach.
This year I am injured and unable to run.
So I did the next best thing.
At sunrise (which was about 7am in Spain), before the rest of my family woke, I left the campsite and walked to the beach where I sat by the shore reading my book.
This collage shows the route I took.
It was a short walk that took around 10 minutes - out of the campsite, down the road, over the railway line and across the road to the beach.
Over the fortnight I read "The Girl Who Played with Fire" by Stieg Larsson, "A Change Of Heart" by Jodi Picoult, "The Wedding" by Nicholas Sparks and the one I had been saving for my holiday - "The Angel's Game " by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.
When I returned an hour later my family were still asleep and hadn't even noticed I'd gone!

  1. How wonderful. Sorry you can't run at the moment, but what a wonderful way to nurture yourself. Even though you are back home you can always go to the beach 'in your mind' and recapture that tranquility.

  2. That sounds like a fantastic start to the day. I'm really enjoying walking the dog early in the morning, with no distractions and enough time to clear my head and think of the day ahead.

Hope you're back to running soon, I know you enjoy it.

  4. Those are lovely pictures. I'm glad you got to have some peaceful time to yourself- we all need it in our lives. I used to run cross-country, and ruined my knees one day. I can't run anymore either- and I hate it. I hope you get well and can get back into it! BTW, love the outfit with the pattern mixing ;) I'm always too afraid to work two patterns at once!

  5. How wonderful! When I was growing up, all our family vacations were camping trips, usually to a beach (but to the mountains if it was a trip with my dad). My very favorite thing to do was to get up before my mom and brother, and go for a walk by myself on the beach. It made me feel so free, independent and grown up, even when I was as young as perhaps 10. There aren't many childhood moments that I'd like to re-live (I prefer to forget, and have in fact managed to forget, most of it), but those walks are something that I'm happy to remember over and over again. I can even remember the feel of the morning fog on my skin, and wearing my favorite hoodie, and watching the most devoted surfers trying to catch some waves before heading to their day jobs. Thanks for the reminder.

  6. Jane,
Sorry you cant run-hope you mend soon.
When I was in Nicaragua I kept waking up a couple of hours earlier than the rest of the crew. The beach/lake was right across my dirt path, and I got to spend many a morning reading, drinking coffee and watching the sun rise. It was a great way to start my day, esp when I too was around people all day long and needed "me" time also.

I had to start a new blog..you can find me again:

  12. That's so awesome! Not your injury....but spending quality time by and with yourself. We all need to do that once in a while to gain composure from life. Glad to know your vacation went well!
